Little Sparrow Album is by Dolly Parton. The album, released on the 23rd of January 2001, became Dolly’s thirty-sixth of her career. It was the second in her trilogy of folk/ bluegrass albums released between 1999 and 2002. The first in the trilogy, The Grass Is Blue, was released in 1999 and was more focused on bluegrass.
The Little Sparrow album focused more on a mix of styles like Appalachian folk, bluegrass and country gospel. Each of the musical styles featured was drawn from the culture of Dolly’s East Tennessee upbringing.
Dolly used a variety of backing musicians; these were members of the alternative bluegrass band Nickel Creek and Alison Krauss. There also featured members of Irish Traditional band Altan. The band’s lead singer, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, performed Irish Gaelic vocals on the Album. Dolly dedicated the album to the memory of her father, Lee Parton.
The Lead single is the title song Little Sparrow, which Dolly took inspiration from a line in the ballad ” Come Fair and Tender Ladies “. The track features the backing vocals of Alison Krauss.
The Little Sparrow album gained many positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success for Dolly. It reached number twelve on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart, her highest charting solo album in six years.
Other Billboard Chart positions were ninety-seven on the Billboard Hot 100, three on the Billboard Independent Albums and twelve on the Bluegrass Albums, where it spent eight weeks.
Outside of the United States, the album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 3rd of February 2001 and peaked at number thirty. It spent two weeks in the Top Forty and a total of seven weeks on the chart there.
