Older Album is by George Michael. It was released in Europe on the 13th of May 1996 and a day later in the United States. Michael moved away from the more synthesised orientated style into more serious territory. The most notable change in style was the inclusion of brass and strings and an overall jazz feel.
It was the first album released by George since the 90s when he produced Listen Without Prejudice ( Vol.1 ). The gap of five and a half years was down to a legal fight George had with his record company.
The album was mainly noteworthy for the release of the six singles. All made the top three in the United Kingdom, hitting a record for the most singles released from a single album to make the UK Singles Chart top three.
The first single of the six released was ” Jesus to a Child “. The song, a melancholy tribute to Anselmo Feleppa, his lover, went on to be one of his best-known songs.
In the United States, it peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100, his highest direct entry on the chart there. The single topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, Finland, Ireland, Norway and Spain.
The Older album was a commercial success for George. In the United States, it reached number six on the Billboard 200 Chart, selling over a million copies in the country.
Outside of the United States, Older was more successful. In the United Kingdom, it debuted at Number One with sales of 281,000. It became one of the biggest debuts ever in UK Albums Chart history and went on to become Michael’s biggest-selling album in the United Kingdom with sales of over 1.8 Million.
The Older album was also a massive success throughout the rest of Europe, making Number One in many countries including Austria, Denmark, Holland, France, Hungary, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Sweden and Spain.
