About Alisha’s Attic
Alisha’s Attic was made up of English sisters Shelly and Karen Poole. They were born fourteen months apart, Karen on the 8th of January 1971 in Chadwell Heath, Essex and Shelly on the 20th of March 1972 in Barking, Essex.
Their father is Brian Poole, who had hits during the 60s with Brian Poole and the Tremoloes, their best known single, ” Do You Love Me “, famously knocked the Beatles off the top of the UK Singles chart in 1963.
Shelly and Karen had the ambition to be a part of the music scene, so began sending off various demo tapes to record companies.
Dave Stewart discovered the sisters after they sent him a demo tape they’d recorded at home. Mercury Records immediately signed Alisha’s Attic and released their debut album shortly after.
Two highly successful promotional tours followed in 1996 and 1997. The sisters toured with INXS, Australian group and performed in the US with the concert tour and travelling music festival, Lilith Fair. They also gave headlining performances in venues around the United Kingdom.
In 1998 they began recording a follow up to Alisha Rules the World album. Shelly and Karen decided to start recording with a new producer, Mark Plati, in New York. A new album, Illumina, was released to mixed reviews from critics in the UK in October 1998, almost two years after their debut.
The band’s image and sound had changed since their first album; it began to look like people had forgotten about Alisha’s Attic. The first single released from Illumina, ” The Incidentals “, made number thirteen on the UK Singles Chart in its first week of release, it spent seven weeks on the UK chart.
Their third studio album, recorded in Mendocino, California and produced by Bill Bottrell, one of Sheryl Crowe’s producers, was a move away from Alisha’s Attic’s previous work. The album peaked at fifty-five in the UK.
In 2001, the record label Mercury records decided to part company with Alisha’s Attic. At that point, the sisters decided to pursue solo careers.
Shelly went on to be a solo singer-songwriter, while Karen became a Brit and Ivor Novello Award-nominated songwriter for other successful artists including Janet Jackson, Kylie Minogue, DJ Snake and the Sugababes.
