Bizarre Fruit Album is by M People, the English dance music band. The album was released on the 14th of November 1994 under the Deconstruction record label.
Nine of the ten songs featured on the album were written by members Mike Pickering and Paul Heard. Lead vocalist Heather Small co-wrote two of the tracks, with ” Padlock ” written by Tamy Smith.
Upon release, the Bizarre Fruit album generally received positive reviews in the music press. Writing for AllMusic, William Cooper liked the album, saying that ” Bizarre Fruit is chock-full of funky house grooves, and Small’s deep, soulful vocals add just the right touch to the mix, making M People considerably warmer than most contemporary dance acts. ” In a retrospective review for NME, published on the 19th of March 2015, Emily Barker wasn’t quite so impressed, comparing to M People’s previous album, Elegant Slumming, she commented that it ” neglected to expand on the soft dance of its predecessor. ”
The Bizarre Fruit album was certified 3x Platinum in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ). It sold over 900,000 copies in the country and notched up worldwide sales of over 1.1 Million.
The first and most popular single, ” Sight for Sore Eyes “, was released on the 7th of November 1994. The song, written by Mike Pickering, Paul Heard and Heather Small, became a successful release for M People.
The single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 19th of November 1994 and peaked at number six. It spent three weeks in the Top Ten and nine weeks on the Top 100.
” Sight for Sore Eyes ” also charted inside the Top Ten in Scotland, Finland and the Netherlands. It peaked inside the Top Forty in Australia, New Zealand, Belgium ( Flanders ) and Iceland. In Germany, M People took the song to number fifty-seven.
The Bizarre Fruit album became a commercial success for the M People. In the United Kingdom, the album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 26th of November 1994 and peaked at number three. It spent twenty-six weeks in the Top Ten and 128 weeks in the Top 100.
Outside of the UK, it reached number fourteen in Australia, four in New Zealand, twenty-eight in Austria, thirty in Germany and twenty-nine in Switzerland.
About M People
M People, which took their name from founder Mike Pickering’s first name, consisted of Mike Pickering, Paul Heard, Heather Small and Shovell ( Andrew Lovell ).
Mike Pickering and Paul Heard started writing together during the early part of the 1990s. In the beginning, Mike Pickering wanted to use different singers to front the band. One of the singers, Heather Small, became the permanent lead vocalist.
Their debut album, Northern Soul, was released on the 4th of November 1991. The album peaked at number twenty-six on the UK Albums Chart. Their debut single ” How Can I Love You More “, released on the 14th of October 1991 and taken from Northern Soul, reached number twenty-nine in the UK and topped the ZIMA Chart in Zimbabwe.
To date, M People’s Album releases are four studio, five compilations, three video and one Remix album. They have also released one Extended Play and twenty singles.
As a multi-award-winning recording artist, M People have won many awards including two Brit, one Mercury and one Silver Clef award. M People continue to tour and play festivals around the world.
