The title comes from Carrie Underwood’s life and career at that point. In a press release, the singer said that ” You step onto this ride called life, and it’s a crazy thing you don’t know anything about, but you get on it anyway, adding that it ” describes the wonderful craziness that I’ve been through over the past couple years. ”
Upon release, the album received mostly positive reviews in the music press. Rob Sheffield, writing for Rolling Stone wrote that the offering by the singer was ” more country and therefore more confident ” than her debut album, Some Hearts. He feels with this album, the singer ” goes for the girl-next-door cred long since given up by Faith Hill. ”
AllMusic‘s senior reviewer, Stephen Thomas Erlewine, awarded the Carnival Ride album four out of five stars. He commented that for her second album she ” plays up her humble, all-American persona, singing songs about small towns and big dreams. ” However, he did feel that the songs ” veer just a bit too close to the big power ballads. ”
The album has been certified 4x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) and Platinum by Music Canada. Worldwide, sales have passed the four million mark.
The lead single, ” So Small “, was released on the 14th of August 2007. The song, co-written with Hillary Lindsey and Luke Laird, was produced by Mark Bright.
The single, the first that credits Carrie Underwood as co-writer was described by the singer as ” a feeling song on how people invest so much of their time and energy into things that aren’t really important, and you don’t really realise that until it’s too late. ”
The song became a successful release for the singer. In the United States, it peaked at number seventeen on the 15th of September 2007 and spent twenty weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
It topped the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart on the 1st of December, holding the position for three weeks.
