Emotions Album is by Mariah Carey, the American singer and songwriter. Her second studio album was released on the 17th of September 1991 under the record label Columbia Records.
The Emotions album was influenced by a range of genres like gospel, R&B, soul and the music of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.
Mariah Carey wrote and produced the songs along with Walter Afanasieff and C+C Music Factory’s Robert Clivillés and David Cole. Additionally, Mariah Carey worked with American singer-songwriter Carole King, co-writing one track, ” If It’s Over “.
Upon release, the album gained mixed reviews in the music press. Rob Tannenbaum writing for Rolling Stone wrote that Mariah Carey ” has a remarkable vocal gift ” but added ” unfortunately, her singing has been far more impressive than expressive. ” Allmusic liked the album commenting it was ” A strong follow-up to Mariah Carey’s self-titled debut album, Emotions puts to rest any concern of a sophomore slump. “
Despite the mixed reviews of critics, the Emotions album has been certified 4× Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) for sales estimated of 3,595,000 copies in the United States.
It also went 4x Platinum in Canada and Japan. The album has been certified Platinum in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden and the Netherlands. In France and Switzerland, the Emotions album has been certified Gold for sales of 100,000 and 25,000 respectively.
The lead single ” Emotions “. was released on the 13th of August 1991. Influenced by 70s disco, it was written and produced by Mariah Carey, Robert Clivillés and David Cole.
The single, which showcases Mariah Carey’s upper voice range, became a successful release. In the United States, it became her fifth consecutive chart-topper on the Billboard Hot 100, spending three weeks at the top. Mariah Carey also took the top spot in Canada.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of October 1991 and peaked at number seventeen. It spent three weeks in the Top Twenty and nine weeks on the Top 100.
Elsewhere the single peaked inside the Top Forty in Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Sweden and the Netherlands.
The Emotions album also became a commercial success for Mariah Carey. In the United States, the album debuted and peaked on the Billboard 200 at number four on the 15th of October 1991, it spent fifty-four weeks on the chart there. It also reached number six on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 26th of October 1991 and peaked at number four. It spent five weeks in the Top Ten and forty weeks on the Top 100.
In Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Holland, Finland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and Japan, the Emotions album reached the Top Ten.
