Legend Album is by Clannad, the Irish folk band. Their eighth studio album was released in May 1984 by the RCA record label.
The Legend album is the soundtrack for Robin of Sherwood, the British broadcaster ITV television series based on the English legend of folk hero Robin Hood.
The series was created by Richard Carpenter, who is best known for creating the cult 70s children’s series Catweazle. It aired in the United Kingdom from 1984 to 1986 on the ITV network.
In the United States, the series was shown on Showtime, the premium cable TV channel. Later, Robin of Sherwood ran on PBS.
There were two incarnations of the legend for the TV show, Robin of Loxley, played by Michael Praed, and Robert of Huntingdon, who appeared in the third series and was performed by Jason Connery.
Clannad became the first Irish band to win a BAFTA ( British Academy of Film and Television Arts ) award for Best Original Television Music.
The first single released from the album, ” Robin ( The Hooded Man ) “, entered the UK Singles Chart on the 5th of May 1984. It missed the Top Forty and peaked at number forty-two. The single spent seven weeks on the chart there.
In Clannad’s native Ireland, the single entered the Irish Singles Chart on the 6th of May 1984 and peaked at number nineteen, it spent three weeks on the chart.
The single also peaked at number thirty-six in New Zealand and spent three weeks on the country’s singles chart.
A video was produced and released to promote the single. It featured scenes of Clannad performing in the studio mixed with scenes from the series.
The Legend album became a commercial success for Clannad. In the United Kingdom, the album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 12th of May 1984 and reached number fifteen. It spent five weeks in the Top Twenty and forty weeks on the chart.
On the New Zealand Albums Chart, it peaked at number nine.

Clannad, which means family in Gaelic, is an Irish family band made up of siblings Ciarán, Moya and Pól Brennan with Noel and Pádraig Duggan.
The band’s music is a mixture of as folk, folk rock, traditional Irish, Celtic and new-age. They are also known to use elements of smooth jazz and Gregorian chant in their compositions.
They Formed in 1970 to play folk festivals in Ireland and first tasted success in Germany where they toured during 1975.
Clannad’s first big commercial break came in 1982 with their recording of the theme tune to the Television series Harry’s Game, which was set in Belfast during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
The 1982 mini-series, made by Yorkshire Television for British broadcaster ITV, was based on the 1975 novel of the same name written by Gerald Seymour, the British writer specialising in stories of crime and espionage.
The theme tune became a chart success for Clannad and brought the band to the public’s attention. In the United Kingdom, ” Harry’s Game ” entered the UK Singles chart on the 6th of November 1982 and reached number five. It spent two weeks in the Top Ten and eleven weeks on the chart. To date, the single is their highest chart position in the United Kingdom. Clannad also had success outside of the UK taking the single to number two in Ireland, nine in Holland and sixteen in Sweden.
Since the release of their first self-titled album in 1973, Clannad has enjoyed worldwide success. Although they no longer tour, lead vocalist Moya Brennan continues to do so as a solo artist.
To date, Clannad’s Album releases are sixteen studio, four live albums, seventeen compilations, four soundtracks and one video album. They have also released one Extended Play, thirty-one singles and thirteen music videos.
As a multi-award-winning recording artist, Clannad has won many awards including one Ivor Novello, one BAFTA, one Billboard Music, One Grammy and one BBC Radio 2 Folk Award.
