Upon release, Avril Lavigne came into some criticism for her songwriting, although the Let Go album garnered mostly positive reviews. Nick Reynolds, writing for BBC Music, said ” half the album plays far too safe: not enough raw guitar, too many weak songs. ” Although he did criticise some of the tracks, he did accept that the singer’s debut was showing ” mistakes of someone still learning. “
Rolling Stone‘s Pat Blashill awarded the album three out of a possible five stars. The critic liked the album’s content saying it is ” fully loaded with another dozen infectious hymns of Total Request angst. ” There was also praise Avril Lavigne’s ” great voice. “
