MCMXC a.D. Album is by Enigma, the German musical project. MCMXC a.D. are Roman numerals for 1990 followed by Anno Domini, Medieval Latin for ” in the year of the Lord “.
The album, Enigma’s debut, was released on the 10th of December 1990, receiving criticism for the fusion of ambient beats, sexual undertones and religion.
The MCMXC a.D. album begins with ” The Voice of Enigma “, voiced by Louisa Stanley. At the time she was an executive at Virgin Records, the record label for the UK release. Michael Cretu’s then-wife Sandra also features on the album as lead vocalist; she went on to enjoy a successful career as a solo artist.
The album is widely considered by critics to be an innovative approach to New-age music, built entirely using samples of other songs. Two well-known examples of the use of samples were the singles ” Sadeness ” and ” Mea Culpa “, which used the chants of Capella Antiqua München and their 1976 work, Paschale Mysterium. The unauthorised use led to a lawsuit which was later settled out of court with Michael Crutu agreeing to compensation.
Despite the controversies surrounding the samples, the MCMXC a.D. became a commercial success for Enigma. The album went on to sell over 4 million copies in the United States alone. By January of 1994, MCMXC a.D. has worldwide sales of over 14 million copies, in addition to massive sales, it has also received over sixty Platinum awards.
The lead single ” Sadeness ( Part I ) “, released in November 1990 as the first of four singles, became a huge international hit, making Number One in twenty-four countries.
In the United States, the single peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Other Billboard Chart positions were Number One on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play, six on Modern Rock Tracks and sixty-seven on the Hot R&B Singles Chart.
Outside of the United States the single reached Number One in over 20 countries, including the United Kingdom, where the single spent one week at the top of the UK Singles Chart. ” Sadeness ( Part I ) ” has sales of over 5 million copies worldwide.
The MCMXC a.D. Album was a commercial success for Enigma. It reached the Top Ten in ten countries, peaking at Number One in the United Kingdom, where it spent one week at the top of the UK Albums Chart.
The Album was also a hit for Enigma in the United States, where it reached number six on the Billboard 200. To date, MCMXC a.D. has spent 282 weeks on the chart there.
Enigma is a German musical project formed in 1990 by Michael Cretu, a Romanian-German musician and producer. At a young age, Michael began learning the piano with his teachers predicting he’d go on to become a concert pianist in adulthood.
In the 1970s Michael became interested in electronic music, exchanging piano keys for a synthesiser. During the next decade, he worked as a producer with many artists, including Sandra, the German pop singer and his wife at the time.
Michael also released records under his name with varying levels of success. After moving to the island of Ibiza with Sandra, he built a recording studio, and the idea for the new age project was born.
To date, Enigma’s Album releases are eight studio, one compilation, one remix and four box sets.
They have also released one Extended Play, twenty-four singles and five DVDs. Enigma has sales over 8.5 million certified albums in the United States. Their estimated sales worldwide are in the region of 70 million.
