The Music album is a mix of dance-pop and electronica, with the compositions influenced by rock, country and folk. After the success of her 1998 album, Ray of Light, which reached number two in the United States and topped the charts in sixteen countries, including the United Kingdom, she wanted to go on the road. Upon release, The Music album received positive reviews in the music press. Stephen Thomas Erlewine writing for Allmusic.com , wrote that the album was ” Filled with vocoders, stylish neo-electro beats, dalliances with trip-hop, and, occasionally, eerie synthesised atmospherics, Music blows by in a kaleidoscopic rush of colour, technique, style, and substance. ” He also praised Madonna’s work with Mirwais Ahmadzaï ” Whenever she works with Mirwais, Music truly comes alive with the spark and style. ” Q Magazine gave a positive review saying it was ” A more thoroughly radical-sounding album than even Ray Of Light… ” Some critics disliked the use of a Vocoder, which synthesises the human voice, a technique Cher successfully used for her hit single Believe.
