With the release of the second album, Nirvana was taken from being an obscure band of the emerging grunge sound to international fame. The grunge sound originated in Seattle, the largest city in Washington State, US. One of the early pioneers of the culture was record label Sub Pop, founded by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in the late 1980s, they signed, along with Nirvana, Mudhoney and Soundgarden.

Nevermind has sales globally of at least 30 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.
The lead single, ” Smells Like Teen Spirit “, was released on the 10th of September 1991. Recorded in May 1991 at Sound City Studios, Van Nuys, California, it became a critical and commercial success story.

In the United States, it reached a peak of number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and Number One Alternative Songs Chart. Nirvana took the song into the Top Ten in many European countries, including the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart.

Nirvana was an American grunge rock band formed in 1987 by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Although they only released three studio albums during the seven years they were together; Nirvana is considered by many critics and fans alike to be one of the most influential bands in the history of alternative rock.
Nirvana’s original line-up consisted of Kurt Cobain on vocals and guitar, Krist Novoselic on bass and Dave Grohl on drums.
After first meeting at high school, Kurt and Krist formed a band. After many name changes, including Skid Row, Fecal Matter and Ted Ed Fred, they settled on Nirvana. They signed to record label Sub Pop and released their debut album, Bleach.
Their first single for the label was a cover version of ” Love Buzz ” by Shocking Blue, which originally featured on the 1969 album, At Home.
In 2017, Phonographic Performance Limited ( PPL ), a music licensing company and performance rights organisation based in the United Kingdom, published a list of the top twenty most played songs by the band on British TV and radio, they ranked the single at number fourteen.
It was when Nirvana left Sub Pop and moved to DGC Records that they became an international success and brought grunge rock to mainstream attention. Nirvana is the group that gave the label their first Diamond certified, and to date, their best-selling album.
As a multi-award-winning recording artist, Nirvana has won one Grammy, one American Music, one BRIT, seven MTV Video Music and four NME ( British music magazine ) awards.
Lead singer, Kurt Cobain’s mind grew darker over time. He died from a gunshot to the head in his Seattle home on the 5th of April 1994; Nirvana disbanded shortly afterwards.
In 2014, Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. As with most musical geniuses, Kurt suffered a dark side to his personality, the few short years that they were together, they became pioneers of grunge rock, helping to move it from the underground into the mainstream.
