Parachutes Album is by Coldplay, the British rock band. Their debut album was released on the 10th of July 2000 in the United Kingdom by the record label, Parlophone and record label Nettwerk on the 7th of November in the United States.
Upon release, the Parachutes album gained positive reviews in the music press. Coldplay recorded the songs for the album from September 1999 into May 2000 at Rockfield Studios, Wales and Parr Street Studios in Liverpool.
The band produced the songs along with Ken Nelson, the multi-award-winning English record producer, who has also worked with Gomez, Feeder and Kings of Convenience. However, one track featured, ” High Speed ” was produced by fellow Brit Chris Allison, who has worked with various artists including The Beta Band, Walter Becker and Kinky, the Mexican rock band.
As of 2011, the Parachutes album has worldwide sales of over 8.5 million copies. In the United States, the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA )has certified the album 2× Platinum with sales of two million.
In the United Kingdom, the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ) has certified it 9× Platinum with sales exceeding 2.7M.
The Parachutes album has also been certified Platinum in Argentina, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. In Australia, it has gone 3x Platinum and 2x Platinum in Canada.
Elsewhere, the album has been certified Gold in Germany, Denmark, Spain and Switzerland. In France, the Syndicat National de l’Édition Phonographique (SNEP) has confirmed the Parachutes album 2x Gold, with sales of two million copies.
The single, ” Shiver ” was released on the 6th of March 2000 in the UK as the album’s lead single, in the US it was released as the second single after ” Yellow “.
Coldplay’s lead singer, Chris Martin, has admitted that the song was written for a particular woman, an admission that generated speculation as to her identity.
The song was influenced by Jeff Buckley, the American singer-songwriter, who died on the 29th of May 1997 at the age of 30.
” Shiver ” reached number twenty-six on the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart in the United States. In the United Kingdom, the single peaked at number thirty-five on the UK Singles Chart.
The Parachutes album became a commercial success for Coldplay. In the United Kingdom, the album topped the UK Albums Chart, spending one week at Number One. It also reached Number One in Norway. In the United States, it peaked at number fifty-one on the Billboard 200.
Coldplay was formed in 1996 by lead singer Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland. They originally called themselves Pectoralz, changing the name to Starfish when Guy Berryman joined.
When Will Champion came on board, the final line-up became Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion. In 1998, the band later changed the name to Coldplay.
The foursome has worldwide sales of over 100 million records, with global sales of albums over 75 million.
To date, Coldplay’s Album releases are seven studio, four live albums, six compilations and three video albums. They have also released thirteen extended plays, forty-six singles, four promotional singles and forty-seven music videos.
As multi-award-winning recording artists, Coldplay has won many awards including one American Music, two ASCAP ( American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers ) Pop awards, one BBC Music, seven Billboard Music and nine Brit Awards.
