Prince Charming Album is by Adam and the Ants, who were an English New Wave band. The album was released third and final album on the 14th of November 1981. It didn’t go down well with critics, with some commenting it wasn’t as good as their second album, Kings of the Wild Frontier.
All tracks were written by Adam Ant and fellow band member Marco Pirroni, who has also worked with Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sinéad O’Connor.
Prince Charming was the last credited to the group as a whole with all future releases credited solely to Adam Ant. It contains a hidden instrumental track, ” The Lost Hawaiians”, which was a reworking of ” Los Rancheros ” from Kings of the Wild Frontier.
There were three tracks released as singles, two of which reached Number One on the UK Singles Chart, the other, Ant Rap, peaked at number three.
The lead single, ” Stand and Deliver “, was released on the 27th of April 1981. The song focuses on the English Highwayman with Adam adopting the fashionable look of an 18th-century Highwayman, to which he added war paint of the native Americans.
Lyrically the song plays on the romantic idea of the Highwayman as being some hero, when in reality they were dangerous criminals that terrorised many highways at the time.
The group enjoyed success in Europe with ” Stand and Deliver ” with it reaching the Top Ten in countries including Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK Singles Chart at the top, spending five weeks there. Along with the single ” Prince Charming “, the album produced two Number Ones in the country.
The Prince Charming album peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart, spending twenty-one weeks on the chart there. It also reached number twenty-nine in Sweden and forty-three in New Zealand.
The Prince Charming album has been certified Platinum in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ).
About Adam and the Ants
Adam and the Ants were an English band that had chart success during the early 1980s. Stuart Leslie Goddard fronted the band as Adam Ant with the best-known line-up consisting of Marco Pirroni, Kevin Mooney, Terry Lee Miall and Chris Hughes.
Although the band’s career was reletively short and their music not taken seriously in the early days, Adam and the Ants have had a considerable influence on many of today’s artists including Robbie Williams, The Charlatans, Nine Inch Nails and Suede.
The British children’s television channel, CBBC, which is owned by the BBC and targeted at children aged from six to twelve years, produced a song in 2011 titled ” Dick Turpin ” for their Horrible Histories programme. The song, an imitation of ” Stand and Deliver “, has popularised the song again, this time with the younger generation.
To date, Adam and the Ants album releases are ten studio and six Compilations. They have also released twenty-five singles and produced twenty-six Music videos.
As award-winning recording artists, Adam and the Ants have won one Ivor Novello Award for Songwriters of the Year and one BRIT for Best Album, their 1980 release, Kings of the Wild Frontier. They also received a Best New Artist Grammy Award nomination the same year.
In March 1982, Adam Ant disbanded the group after he felt that certain band members ” lacked enthusiasm “.
He went on and had a successful solo career scoring ten Top Ten hits on the UK Singles Chart from 1980 to 1983, which included three Number Ones. He is still touring today.
