Rocks Album is by Aerosmith, the American rock band. Their fourth studio album was released under the record label Columbia Records on the 3rd of May 1976.
The album was produced by Aerosmith and Jack Douglas, the American record producer best known for his work with artists like the New York Dolls, Cheap Trick, Miles Davis, The Who, John Lennon, Patti Smith and Aerosmith.
He produced many of Aerosmith’s albums during the 70s and in 1971 worked as the engineer on John Lennon’s Imagine album, which topped the charts in many countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Holland, Norway and the United Kingdom.
The Rocks album, which follows their 1975 Toys in the Attic, is considered by fellow musicians, music critics and die hard fans to be one of Aerosmith’s career highlights.
At the time of release, the album received mixed reviews in the music press, with more favourable reviews coming years later.
John Milward’s review for The Rolling Stone magazine, dated the 29th of July 1976, said that ” While the band has achieved phenomenal commercial success, their fourth album fails to prove that they can grow and innovate as their models did. “
However, he did have praise for the group’s overall performance saying ” The songs have all the band’s trademarks and while they can be accused of neither profundity nor originality, Aerosmith’s stylized hard-rock image and sound pack a high-energy punch most other heavy metal bands lack. “
Greg Prato’s retrospective review for AllMusic, he awarded it their maximum of five stars and commented that it ” did the best job of capturing Aerosmith at their most raw and rocking. ” He concluded that ” With Rocks, Aerosmith appeared to be indestructible. “
The Rocks album has been certified 4x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) for selling over four million copies in the United States and has gained Platinum status in Canada with sales of over 100,000.
The lead single, ” Back in the Saddle “, was released on the 22nd of March 1977. Written by band members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, it was produced by Jack Douglas.
The single, one of Aerosmith’s most massive charting releases, uses the ” saddle ” as a metaphor for sex. “
Back in the Saddle ” became a successful release in the United States. The singlemade it to number thirty-eight on the 7th of May 1977 and spent eight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Rocks album went on to become a commercial success for Aerosmith. In the United States, the album reached number three on the 26th of June 1976 and spent fifty-three weeks on the billboard 200.
In Canada, it peaked at fourteen on the RPM 100, a now-defunct music industry publication. Outside of the US and Canada, the Rocks album reached number thirteen in Japan and forty-six in Sweden.
