Rumours have worldwide sales of over 40 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. In the United States and Canada, the album has been certified 2× Diamond.
In the United Kingdom, the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ) certified the album 11x Platinum with sales of 3.8 million. It has also been awarded 13x Platinum in Australia and New Zealand, 5x Gold in Germany and Gold in Spain, Netherlands and South Africa.
The lead single, ” Go Your Own Way “, was released December 1976. The single, written by band member, Lindsey Buckingham, was a huge success. Pre-orders for the single had reached 800,000 copies before the album’s release, the biggest advance in the history of their record label at the time.
In the United States, the song debuted at number seventy-one on the Billboard Hot 100, climbing to peak at number ten. In the United Kingdom, it was not as successful as the US release, only reaching number thirty-eight on the UK Singles Chart. The single also charted in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Germany and Belgium.
The Rumours Album was a commercial success for Fleetwood Mac. In the United States, it reached Number One on the Billboard 200, spending 249 weeks on the chart.
In the United Kingdom, the album also reached the top of the Albums chart, spending one week at the top and 712 weeks on there.
Rumours were also successful elsewhere, reaching the top of the albums charts in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands, South Africa. In Sweden, it peaked at number nineteen, France at thirteen, Norway seventeen and Japan at thirty-three.
