Spice Album is by the Spice Girls, the English pop group. The debut album was released on the 19th of September 1996 to a mixed reception by critics.
Spice, essentially pop in composition, fuses dance, R&B and hip-hop. It is considered by many to be the album that gave the teen pop another run after the popularity of the teen groups of the 60s and 70s.
The concept behind Spice, girl power became a philosophy that young female fans could relate to at the time.
There were five tracks released from the album, with the first four singles topping the UK Singles Chart, making the Spice Girls the first act to do so in the history of the chart.
Spice was certified 10x Platinum in the United Kingdom and Spain, with Diamond in France and Canada. In many countries, the album reached Platinum or multi-Platinum status with Gold in Mexico and 3x Gold in Germany.
Sales of Spice reached 23 million copies worldwide, making it the biggest-selling album by a girl group in the history of music. The record is listed as one of the most successful albums of all time.
The lead single, ” Wannabe “, released on the 8th of July 1996 as the group’s debut single, features rapping by members Mel B and Geri Halliwell.
The uptempo dance-pop track received mixed reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Lyrically the song focuses on the friendship between females. The song became an iconic empowerment single and the most characteristic of their message.
” Wannabe ” debuted at number three on the UK Singles Chart and moved up to the Number One spot, where it spent seven weeks at the top.
It also reached Number One on the singles charts in Belgium (both the Flemish and French charts), United States, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. In Austria and Italy, the single peaked inside the Top Five.
The Spice album became a success for the Spice Girls. In the United Kingdom, it debuted at Number One with sales of 114,000, spending time at the top for fifteen non-consecutive weeks.
Spice peaked at Number One on the Billboard 200 in the United States, staying there for five weeks. It sold 1.46 million copies in the first twelve weeks of release there and became the biggest-selling album of 1997, with over 5 Million copies sold by the end of the year.
The Spice album was a massive success and reached the top of the charts in around seventeen countries.
About the Spice Girls
The Spice Girls are a British pop girl group formed in 1994. The original members were Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell and Victoria Beckham ( née Adams ).
With boy bands dominating the pop music scene, an advertisement was placed in The Stage, a British newspaper for the entertainment industry.
The ad, which received hundreds of replies, asked for singers to audition for a yet to be formed all-female pop group. Eventually, the line-up was chosen with the five signing to Simon Fuller’s 19 Entertainment.
The Spice Girls quickly became a pop phenomenon. With a mania not seen since the Beatles of the 60s and David Cassidy of the 70s, they have gone down in history as cultural icons. By 1998, their global earnings were estimated to be $500–800 million.
To date, the Spice Girls Album releases are three studio, one Compilation and five video albums. They also released eleven singles and eighteen music videos.
As a multi-award-winning recording artist, the Spice Girls have won numerous awards including three American Music, two ASCAP Pop Music, eight ASCAP London Music, one Bambi ( Germany ), four Billboard Music, two Bravo Music ( Germany ) and five Brits.
