Spirits Having Flown Album by the Bee Gees. The album was the fifteenth released by the brothers and the first after their work on the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever.
It was released on the 5th of February 1979 by record label RSO. The album’s first three tracks were released as singles and all reached Number One in the United States, this gave the Bee Gees an unbroken run of six US chart-toppers, equalling a record set by The Beatles.
Spirits Having Flown came out at the end of the 70s, the band’s most successful era. During the early part of the next decade, the Bee Gees faced diminishing radio play, especially in the United States.
Many associated the group with the disco era of the late 1970s and so considered the style of music to be out of favour. The radio stations refusal to play their music led to Robin Gibb calling it ” censorship ” and ” evil ” during interviews.
Actual sales figures for the album are sketchy, some estimates put the worldwide sales at 20 million copies, however in 2003 the BBC adjusted the number upwards at 30 million.
In the United States, the Recording Industry Association of America ( RIAA ) certified Spirits Having Flown Platinum with 1,000,000 copies sold, but the record label never had the album re-certified, so it remains only an estimate.
Websites are claiming the sales in the United States are 6 million, which are unofficial. As other estimates not confirmed, the album doesn’t appear on any best selling Album lists.
” Too Much Heaven “, the first from the album, was released on the 24th of October 1978 in the United Kingdom and on the 21st of November in the United States and Canada.
The song, released nine months after ” Night Fever “, was the longest gap between singles since 1975. The ballad moved away from their previous uptempo disco music and more into the mainstream.
The Bee Gees donated over 7 million dollars in publishing royalties to the Music for UNICEF fund, which had been launched to celebrate the International Year of the Child.
” Too Much Heaven ” reached Number One on the Billboard Top 100 in the United States and topped the charts in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Italy, Norway, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and South Africa. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and reached the Top Ten in many other countries.
Spirits Having Flown became a commercial success for the Bee Gees. The album reached Number One in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Canada, France, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and West Germany.
