Step One Album is by Steps, the British pop group. Their debut album was released on the 14th of September 1998 in the UK and Europe under the record label Jive, part of Sony Music Entertainment.
Featuring twelve tracks, it contains several cover versions of well-known songs: Banarama’s “Last Thing on My Mind “, a 1992 number UK seventy- three for the female pop group.
“Love U More “, initially released by Sunscreem in 1992, it reached number thirty-six in the United States and twenty-three in the United Kingdom.
Worlds Apart’s “Experienced” and “Stay With Me “, which originally featured as an album track called “Stay with Me Tonight” by UK hard rock band Romeo’s Daughters.
The Step One album generally received positive reviews. AllMusic‘s Heather Phares gave the album four out of five stars calling it “bouncy, infectious dance-pop. ”
A successful release for Steps, the album sold over 1.4 million copies in the United Kingdom and has been certified 5× Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry ( BPI ).
Other certifications are Platinum in Australia and New Zealand with sales of 70,000 and 15,000 copies respectively.
In Belgium, the Step One album sold 100,000 copies, which certifies it 2x Platinum there. In Japan, Steps gained a Gold disc from The Recording Industry Association of Japan ( RIAJ )for sales of 100,000.
The lead single, “5,6,7,8 “, was released as the group’s debut on the 17th of November 1997.
The single, a mixture of country and techno-pop, was written to take advantage of line dancing, a style of dancing that had grown in popularity in the United Kingdom at that time.
Verses of the song were performed by group member Lee Latchford-Evans, with Claire Richards, Lisa Scott-Lee and Faye Tozer performing the chorus.
“5,6,7,8” became a successful first release for the quintet. In Australia, the single topped the singles chart there.
In the United Kingdom, Steps missed the Top Ten, peaking at number fourteen. The group also had success in Belgium ( Flanders ) and New Zealand, where the single reached number two.
Step One album became a commercial success for Steps. In the United Kingdom, the album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 26th of September 1998 and peaked at number two. It spent twenty-five weeks in the Top Ten and sixty-four weeks in the Top 100.
Elsewhere it also found success. In the United States, the album reached number seventy-nine on the 11th of March 2000 and spent ten weeks on the Billboard 200.
In Belgium ( Flanders ) it topped the Albums Chart and peaked inside the Top Ten in Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Ireland.
Steps, the British dance-pop group, is made up of Claire Richards, Lee Latchford-Evans, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer and Ian ‘H’ Watkins.
Put together in May 1997 by Tim Byrne, Barry Upton and Steve Crosby, after they placed an advert in The Stage magazine.
The quintet’s management had lined up a string of songs similar to their debut “5,6,7,8 “. The plans were shelved when Pete Waterman, who had a series of hits in the 80s and 90s with the likes of Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, became involved in the project.
The group’s name comes from the dance routines associated with the music videos, with the moves often provided on each release for fans to copy.
Steps have notched up worldwide record sales of over 20 million. They have achieved chart success with fourteen consecutive Top Five singles in the United Kingdom, including two chart-topping singles, one of which was a double A-side.
In Addition to their UK chart success, many of their records have become hits throughout Europe.
The members disbanded on the 26th of December 2001 after H & Claire left. In 2017, Steps reformed with all the original members.
To date, Steps Album releases are five studio, two live albums, seven compilations and seven video albums. They have also released two Extended Plays, twenty-six singles and twenty-seven music videos.
