The Boy Who Knew Too Much Album is by Mika, the Lebanese-born English singer-songwriter. His second studio album was released on the 21st of September 2009 under the record labels Casablanca/ Universal Republic in the United States, with the United Kingdom release under Island Records.
Mika wrote six of the tracks, with six co-written with Walter Afanasieff, Jodi Marr, Imogen Heap and Rob Davis, former guitarist with the glam rock band Mud. Production for the album was by Greg Wells, Imogen Heap, Mika and RedOne, the stage name of Moroccan-Swedish record producer, singer and songwriter, Nadir Khayat.
The Boy Who Knew Too Much album generally received positive reviews in the music press upon release. Peter Robinson, writing for the British newspaper The Guardian compared this offering to Mika’s previous debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion, commenting that ” While not very different at all, the tunes are marginally better, ” adding that ” the production slightly bigger. ” In his review for British newspaper The Telegraph, Thomas H Green awarded the singer three stars saying ” Mika’s swooping, over the top arrangements and arch delivery make for contagiously merry pop music. “
The Boy Who Knew Too Much album, recorded in London, England and Los Angeles, California, took two years to complete. The make-up of the album is influenced by the music of the 80s and 90s. Mika also drew inspiration from the likes of 50s singer Patti Page, Harry Nilsson and German Jewish composer Kurt Weill, best-known for The Threepenny Opera, which featured ” Mack the Knife “, a ballad made famous by jazz legend Louis Armstrong in 1956.
On Mika’s website, MikaSounds, he explained the idea behind the concept for his second release saying ” I thought ‘ where do I go back to? Before all this happened, what made me start writing songs? ’ I loved that feeling of being 17/18 years old, and I wanted to return to that period .”
The lead single, ” We Are Golden “, was released on the 6th of September 2009. Written by Mika who co-produced it with Greg Wells, it features the vocals of the gospel choir of Andraé Crouch, who was an American Pastor, gospel singer-songwriter, arranger and record producer. He is considered to be ” the father of modern gospel music ” by the gospel music industry.
The single became a successful release for Mika. In the United States, it reached number five on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart. It topped the Spanish Physical Singles Chart and peaked at number three in Italy.
In the United Kingdom, the single entered the UK singles chart on the 19th of September 2009 and reached number four. It spent one week in the Top Ten and seven weeks in the Top 100. ” We Are Golden ” also made the Top Ten in Belgium ( Flanders / Wallonia ), Hungary and Israel.
The Boy Who Knew Too Much album became a commercial success for Mika. In the United States, the album peaked at number nineteen on the 10th of October and spent five weeks on the Billboard 200. It also reached five on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums Chart.
In the United Kingdom, the Boy Who Knew Too Much album entered the UK Albums Chart on the 3d of October 2009 and reached number four. It spent one week in the Top Ten and nineteen weeks in the Top 100.
Elsewhere, the album made the Top Ten in Argentina, Australia, Belgium ( Flanders / Wallonia ), Holland, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. In France, Mika took the album to the top of the SNEP ( Syndicat national de l’édition phonographique ) Chart.
Michael Holbrook Penniman, Jr. was born in Beirut on the 18th of August 1983. Known professionally as Mika, he is a Lebanese-born English singer and songwriter. Mika speaks fluent French, Spanish and Italian. He has often been compared to the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, a comparison that may upset die-hard fans of the rock legends. His first release in 2006, ” Relax, Take It Easy ” was a limited 7″ single and digital download. The single reached number fourteen on the Digital Downloads Chart in the United States and had success elsewhere, reaching the top in Poland, Netherlands, France, Czech Republic and Belgium. In the United Kingdom, the single peaked at number eighteen on the UK Singles Chart. To date, Mika’s Album releases are four studio and two videos. He has also released four extended plays, twenty-two singles and sixteen music videos. As an award-winning recording artist, Mika has won a BBC Sound in 2007 and a 2009 MTV Europe Music Award.
