The Joshua Tree Album is by U2. The album, released on the 9th of March 1987, was a much harder-hitting sound, unlike their previous 1984 release, The Unforgettable Fire, which had a more ambient feel.
Receiving widespread critical acclaim, the inspiration for the album came from American tour experiences, literature and politics.
The Joshua Tree was a commercial success. It is one of the world’s best-selling albums, selling over 25 million copies and often features on various greatest albums of all time lists on Rolling Stone magazine and Billboard.
The lead single and the third track on the album, ” With or Without You “, was released on the 16th March 1987. The most successful single at the time for the band, it became their first Number One single in both the United States and Canada.
The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and Canada’s RPM Singles Chart for one week. In the United Kingdom, it peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart, spending eleven weeks on the chart there.
In U2’s native Ireland the single reached Number One and spent six weeks on the chart. It made the Top Five in Belgium ( Flanders ), Finland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.
The Joshua Tree album was a commercial success for U2. In the United States, the album reached Number One on the Billboard 200, spending 121 weeks on the chart.
In the United Kingdom, it topped the UK Albums Chart, holding the top position for two weeks. It spent 201 weeks on the chart there.
The Joshua Tree album also topped the charts in Austria, Canada, Netherlands, France, Germany, New Zealand and Sweden.
In Australia and Spain, the album peaked at number three.
U2 are an Irish rock band. The band formed in 1976 in Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland. The line-up consists of Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.
The group, first called themselves Feedback then The Hype finally settling on U2. Their final name was chosen because it was open to interpretation and it was the one that they disliked the least from a list of six potential names they’d been given.
U2’s debut album, Boy, was released on the 20th of October 1980. Boy was well received by critics. It included ” I Will Follow “, the band’s first single to get airplay on radio in the United States. The album reached number fifty-two in the United Kingdom and sixty-three in the United States.
To date, U2’s album releases are fourteen Studio, one live, three Compilations, eleven Subscriber-exclusives, eight Extended Play and fifteen Video. They have also released sixty-seven singles and sixty-seven music videos.
As a multi-award-winning recording group, U2 have won twenty-two Grammys, seven BRIT’s, fourteen Meteor, one American Music, four MTV Video Music, eleven Q, two Juno, three NME and two Golden Globes.
U2 have sales of more than 170 million records, making the group one of the best-selling music artists in history. In 2005, the band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
