Voulez-Vous Album is by ABBA. The sixth studio album by the group was initially released on the 23rd of April 1979 by record labels Polar and Epic in the United Kingdom. In the United, the album was released under the Atlantic label.
Voulez-Vous ( Do you want? in English ) featured some singles that would go on to be chart hits all over Europe including ” Chiquitita “, ” Does Your Mother Know ” and ” I Have a Dream “. The album showed that ABBA had grasped the popularity of disco music, which was being dominated by acts like the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Barry White and Le Freak at the time.
The Voulez-Vous album was the first of ABBA’s to be mostly recorded at Polar Studios in Stockholm and the only one by the group to feature a recording made outside of Sweden, which was instrumental for the title track, partly recorded in Miami.
Polar Studios, set up by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson, the band’s manager, was created in a disused cinema in the centre of Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. ABBA enlisted the help of recording expert Tom Hidley to oversee the design and construction. At the time it would be the most technically advanced studio in the world.
The title track and second from the album, ” Voulez-Vous “, was released on the 2nd of July 1979. The song was released as a double A-side with ” Angeleyes ” in the United Kingdom and Ireland, with it as a single A-side in other countries.
In the United States, Voulez-Vous peaked at number eighty on the Billboard Hot 100, spending three weeks on the chart there. It also reached number thirty-seven on the Adult Contemporary, eighty-five on Cash Box and seventy-seven on the Record World charts.
The single topped the singles chart in Belgium ( Flanders ) and peaked inside the Top Ten in Ireland, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Switzerland.
In Canada, Voulez-Vous reached number eighty-seven. In Germany and Finland, the single peaked at fourteen and twenty respectively.
The Voulez-Vous album was certified Platinum in Germany, Finland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In Canada, it gained 2× Platinum status with sales of 200,000 copies sold. In the United States, Hong Kong and Spain, the album was certified Gold. There is no certification for Japan, but it achieved sales of 623,000.
The album was a commercial success for ABBA. In the United States, it reached number nineteen on the 1st of September 1979 and spent twenty-seven weeks on the Billboard 200.
In the United Kingdom, the Voulez-Vous album entered the UK Albums Chart at the top of the 19th of May 1979, where it spent four weeks. It spent eighteen weeks in the Top Ten and forty-three weeks on the chart.
It also topped the albums charts in Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland, Germany and Japan.
In New Zealand and Austria, it peaked at number two. In Australia, the album reached number five, and it made at six in Canada.
ABBA was a Swedish pop group. Formed in 1972 in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, the group consisted of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.
ABBA is one of the best-selling music acts of all time. Estimates of total record sales vary wildly depending on where you read them. Reports of total sales range from between 140 to over 500 million units.
The four Swedes are the best-selling band of all time from continental Europe and the most successful to have competed in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest.
ABBA’s music remains popular today, and in 1999, their music was used for the successful musical Mamma Mia! which toured the world. Later in 2008, a film version of the musical was released, starring Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Amanda Seyfried.
It became a massive success with the public and went on to be the highest-grossing film in the United Kingdom that year.
The group’s Album releases were eight studio, two live, seven compilations and three box sets. They also released four video Albums, seventy-three singles and produced thirty-three music videos.
