The album received a lukewarm response from critics in the music press. Awarding four stars out of five, Jon Weiderhorn, writing for Rolling Stone, said the album was ” more than a natural progression, it’s a bold leap forward. ” He also noted the change in direction for songwriter Noel Gallagher since their first offering, saying that he was ” once filled melodies with sharp, bristling guitars and crisp, cracking beats, these days he’s relying on gentle, reflective rhythms. ” In Andy Gill’s review for British newspaper The Independent, he liked the album overall saying ” Throughout, it’s Gallagher’s way with a tune, any tune, that remains their trump card. ” However he was negative about the track ” She’s Electric ” calling it ” laddism of a tiresomely generic kind. ”
Previously labelled as a mere indie act, the record became a turning point in their career, shooting them to worldwide stardom and cementing their place in British indie music history.
